To better assist and inform our customers, we have compiled a short list of frequently asked questions.
Q – How long will it take to pave my driveway?
A – Depending on the size of the project, most driveways can be completed in one day. If the driveway requires excavation and sub-base work, the process might take 2-3 days to complete.
Q – Is there a square foot price for estimating a driveway?
A – Things like existing conditions, proximity to the asphalt plants, driveway layout, scope of work and job site access can all alter the pricing of any given job. We are more than happy to meet our customers on site and discuss each project in detail so nothing gets missed. We can then provide you with a personalized written estimate.
Q – How long do I have to stay off of my new driveway?
A – We recommend staying off the new driveway with vehicles for three days. Foot traffic is fine shortly after we leave. Keep in mind that new asphalt can take up to one year to fully cure. During this period, the material can become soft and malleable on hot summer days. Turning your steering wheel when your car is not in motion may scar the material. Sharp objects like kick stands, ladders, patio chairs can create holes or depressions in your new driveway.
Q – What do I do to maintain my new driveway?
A – We recommend edging the new pavement with whatever material is adjacent to the driveway. In most cases, this means placing screened loam along the edges and planting grass seed. The grass roots will help the edge from breaking away or eroding over time. We do not recommend sealcoating the new driveway for at least one year, as the material needs time to fully cure. Rubberized crack filling and sealcoating can be applied anytime after that at the owner’s discretion.
Q – Do you recommend a one or two coat paving application?
A – Unfortunately, there isn’t a building code for paving driveways. Different companies will quote different methods and depths of asphalt, making it hard for the customer to compare estimates. We quote a two coat paving application. Typical driveways receive a 1.5” base coat with a 1” surface coat. These are compacted depths after a roller has hit the material. The base coat material is rocky in nature and provides the strength or foundation for the driveway. The surface coat has smaller stones and contains more asphalt, or “glue” than the base coat material. Provided there is an adequate sub-base and proper drainage around the driveway, customers can expect to get 20-25 years out of a properly paved driveway. This has been the process used at Casco Bay Paving since its inception in 1984.
